General Andrew Davis Bruce was the third President and the first Chancellor of the University of Houston. Bruce became president of the University on September 1, 1954, and chancellor in December 1956. He retired from the University after the 1960-61 academic year. Bruce had served in the United States army for 37 years, serving in both World Wars, and was the governor of Hokkaido, Japan, during the United States occupation. Bruce retired to North Carolina, where he died in 1969. He is buried in...
